Creating a brand identity that stands out and doesn’t have a hefty price tag attached to it may seem impossible to most people. The truth is, you don’t need an expensive marketing agency to build your brand identity, there are several tools out there that can help guide you through this process. Here are just some things to get you started on developing a brand identity that you’re proud of.
Before you begin any work on building your identity it’s important to do some research to better understand your target market and your competitors. Take a look at what your competitors are doing and determine what you like and don’t like about their brand identity. This will help you figure out where the gaps are in the industry and give you a better idea of what value you can add, or what you can do to stand out.
Setting a vision and mission for yourself or your business before building your brand identity is key to make sure that your identity reflects you and what you believe in or want to achieve. These statements are used to explain a business’s purpose and direction and can be used going forward to motivate yourself and your team, plus show your customers what you believe in.
Customers will remember you by your image and branding, so you want to give them an image that is worth remembering (in a good way). Designing your brand image can be one of the hardest parts of building your identity, but it doesn’t need to cost you an arm and a leg to get yourself an image that you can be proud of. Designers can be pricey, but there are several great tools out there that make the cost of design more affordable like Squarespace or WordPress for designing a slick and easy to make website, or Fiveer that allows you to find professionals that will do work for you for less.
Remember—you don’t want to have to re-do your image a few months in, so spending a little extra money to get an image you are 110% sure about it will be worth it.
How do you want your customers to feel and how would you like your customers to see your business? Your branding is what people will remember you as, and making sure that everything within your business is branded consistently will be key for showing your customers that you’re professional and dependable. Use your colour scheme and logo in every part of your business.
For example: If you’re sending out invoices or quotes to customers, make sure these documents are easily identifiable as being from your business. Software like Freshbooks can help make this process seamless and easy for you and you don’t even have to be an accountant or graphic designer to make it work!
Brands should have a personality, whether you are at the forefront of your brand, or behind the scenes. Determine what type of personality or person your customers will resonate with and own that personality. It may help to create a brand persona to help give you an idea of what your brand would be like as a person. Once you develop what you want your personality to be for your brand, work to let that shine through in everything that you do—social media, e-mail communications, etc.
Developing your brand image can be a fun and exciting time, and also a time for a lot of decisions that will impact your business in the long run. So take your time when deciding what you want to portray as a brand, and don’t settle of mediocre.
